Feeding Picky Eaters

When serving as the main the feeder of your tribe, oftentimes you can find yourself beyond frustrated. Why? Because those you love and care about the most don’t always want to eat what is best for them and their health.

Instead of fighting and trying to force certain foods into your family’s meal repertoire, I would like to recommend two passive and pleasant strategies that have worked for me and my tribe of picky eaters.

1. TYING THE MEAL UP IN A PRETTY PINK BOW 

First, let’s imagine a scenario. Let’s say that in your tribe you have two little toddlers who are picky eaters, and a husband who does not like creativity in the kitchen. Sound familiar? What to do when meal time arrives and you want to expand their palates for health’s sake? You could just go full-throttle and MAKE them eat what you serve for dinner; or, you could avoid wasting a bunch of food and try an alternate approach.

One strategy that I like to use was originally introduced to me by my dear friend, whom I co-taught with in an inclusion highschool biology class. She called it, tying it up in a pretty pink bow.

She believed that if you made something look, taste, feel, smell, and seem like the real deal, then the ones partaking would be more apt to believe that it was indeed the real deal. In her case, that pertained to lessons that were free of errors, visually engaging, and full of involvement. Half the time, her students didn’t even realize they were learning. The pretty pink bow served as a beautiful distraction from the content that was interwoven.

What does this mean to you?

First, it means that in order to get your loved ones to even consider eating something new and ridiculously healthy, you’re going to need to trick them a little. Take, for example, these Quinoa and Turkey Mini Meatloaves.

A delicious alternative to complete meat-based meatloaves. Kid-sized and full of moisture, richness, and flavor. A guaranteed family favorite.

Next, along with all these details comes the best part: 3 grams of fiber, 5.5 grams of protein and lean ground turkey, that is 99% fat free.

Thus, a perfect example of the tying it up in a pretty pink bow strategy. The meatloaf is cute in size, slathered in a pretty red sauce, and looks like regular meatloaf. The pretty pink bow has completed its objective of distracting the eater from noticing significant differences in the ingredients and “appearing” healthy.

2. SLOW INTEGRATION

Trickery is a great thing. It is a powerful eye-opener for the not-so-inclined-to-be-healthy eater. Another great form of trickery that goes hand-in-hand with the pretty presentation of a dish has to do with slow integration of healthy proteins.

Therefore, as you can see in the meatloaf recipe I referenced to above, I am not making PURE quinoa meatloaf. It is a mix of lean ground turkey and quinoa. I will work on using only quinoa is recipes down the road when my tribe recognizes and starts to actually LOVE quinoa. I know I’ll get there, but for now, I’m starting with a little quinoa and taking simple, baby steps. Just a meatloaf with some hidden (and complete) protein that is plant-based. 

I call this strategy, slow integration, because of the specific speed to which I believe new foods should be integrated into the “family food groups.” Just like a new boyfriend, a new teacher, or even a new pair of shoes- integrating something new into the household is a delicate matter that can be resisted if rushed.
