Ah….breakfast smoothie bowl. You are the ying to my yang! If only I had found you earlier in my life as a parent….
The breakfast smoothie bowl has become a solid winner in my recipe books. Not sure why that would be? Let me explain…
Imagine you wake up, beautifully rested, ready to embark on the new day. The smell of bacon is wafting into your bedroom. You hear the faint whistle of a tea kettle coming from the kitchen. Little giggles resonate downstairs and you quickly shuffle to throw on your robe and slippers and say good morning.
Now……ACTUALLY WAKE UP.
That scenario is rare and for the most part, does not exist for lead feeders of their tribe.
Mornings are fast and full of movement. They start with a bang and–before you know it–they end. With an even BIGGER bang.
The funniest truth is that somewhere is the middle of trying to drink your already cold coffee and brushing your and everyone else’s teeth, is suppose to be this thing called….
And I can assure you, that on a weekday in my household, it’s not going to be bacon.
It needs to be quick, healthy, and EATEN.
Enter the BREAKFAST SMOOTHIE BOWL. A new found obsession of mine that has apparently been around for ages. (Who knew all those pretty pictures I see on Instagram actually have a purpose in my family’s breakfast routine!?)
SO WHAT EXACTLY IS A BREAKFAST SMOOTHIE BOWL?
What a smoothie bowl entails is actually quite simple. Let me illustrate this truth in the “smoothie bowl” formula I just decided to create 🙂
FROZEN SLICED BANANA + FROZEN BERRIES + COCONUT MILK = SMOOTHIE BOWL!!!!
Smoothie bowls all seem to center around the act of blending frozen fruit (usually a mix of organic berries) with a creamy frozen base, such as frozen sliced bananas. Beyond that, it’s just a matter of thinning your blended fruit with a liquid. In my dairy-free case, coconut milk.
The result of this combination creates a creamy, cold consistency, very similar to what I would consider soft serve ice-cream.
For my boys, this discovery means one thing and one thing only.
ICE CREAM FOR BREAKFAST!!
That’s right, a smoothie bowl greatly resembles soft-serve ice-cream. The only difference between the two is that a smoothie bowl takes WAY less time and effort to make & there is no added sugars/cream.
But, my boys don’t care really about that part. The coolest part for them is that they get to take ownership in picking the toppings…
In this case, they chose apples (left over from what they didn’t eat the night before), chia seeds, and hemp hearts. This worked beautifully for their palates and were so high in nutritional density…which made me happy! Still, the list is certainly not limited to these three choices.
Here are a few more toppings you could add into the mix:
- Shredded unsweetened coconut
- Fresh fruit (such as sliced strawberries, fresh blueberries, or sliced bananas)
- Raw seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, or sesame)
- A crumbled breakfast muffin (such as my Chocolate Banana Cupcake Muffins)
- A dollop of nut or seed butter (such as peanut butter or sunflower seed butter)
- Drizzled honey
- Mini chocolate chips
As you can see, there are so many other fun possibilities you could offer your peanut gallery. And don’t forget, presentation goes a long way. Make it fun by putting a few of these toppings in small bowls- like an ice cream topping bar– and let them quickly pick 2 that they would like on their soft serve.
What became a tough morning start has turned into a fun ritual, just 3 steps long.
The first time I made a smoothie bowl- dare I admit it- one week ago, I presented it to them as a treat for breakfast. Since then, it has been smoothie bowl central in my house. I can’t believe it. A healthy answer to my breakfast prayers!
There are sooooo many more breakfast smoothie bowls out there in the internet universe. Some of my absolute favorites can be found
I hope you find success with it too. I’d love to see! They make for beautiful pictures. Tag me on Instagram, #naturbaker, if you make one you’d like to share!
